Mozart Department 2056

“You, too, are Mozart - remember that!”

Mozart’s spirit is everywhere, always, says the artist duo Deutschbauer/Spring, who invite the public to submit their own creative efforts on the theme of Mozart.

If media presence and public profile are any guide, then Julius Deutschbauer and Gerhard Spring are two of Austria’s best-known artists. Their posters and campaigns regularly make unmistakable statements on topical issues.

For WIENER MOZARTJAHR 2006, Deutschbauer/Spring are calling on the public to "participate actively in the spirit of Mozart". How is this supposed to work? "Our actions on the street, in restaurants and on trains are dictated by the spirit of Mozart. ‘Mozart Department 2056’ is the receptacle for collecting these actions," the two project creators maintain. They are looking for any kind of expression (pictures, text, music, dance, knick-knacks etc.) about, for, or against Mozart. There are no formal specifications. And the rules for participation could hardly be simpler. Participants merely need to register by post, telephone, fax or E-mail. Deutschbauer/Spring guarantee that all applicants will be allowed to perform, and will make an effort to ensure equal conditions for all.

About 40 performance venues as well as posters, magazines and the Web site at www.referatmozart2056.com will ensure widespread public awareness. Contributions will be presented permanently on the Web site and in a quarterly printed magazine entitled "Mozart Department 2056".

For Deutschbauer/Spring, the spirit of Mozart does not exist a priori. Thus the slogan "You, too, are Mozart - remember that!" was chosen as the programmatic title of the opening event of Mozart Department 2056, which took place from 20 to 22 December 2005 in Hall G of the Tanzquartier Wien.
