Calling Mozart
Audio city guide on the life, works and times of W. A. Mozart The city as an exhibition: Listen to excerpts from Mozarts Requiem, played in the city where it was composed. Learn about the alla Turca fashion of the baroque and rococo periods in the place where the opera Abduction from the Seraglio was written. This joint project by WIENER MOZARTJAHR 2006 and Radio Österreich 1 lets listeners hear and experience Mozart at 50 locations all over Vienna. Via cell phones or audio guides, Calling Mozart provides the most important facts about Mozarts life and music at the original locations where he lived and worked: from the main customs office near what is today Fleischmarkt, where he first entered the city, to the St. Marx cemetery, where a memorial stone commemorates Mozarts last resting place, the exact location of which is no longer known; from the places of his triumphs, like the former Burgtheater on Michaelerplatz, to the scenes of defeat, such as the comparatively modest apartments where he spent his last years - for example, the apartment on Landstrasse, where he wrote Eine kleine Nachtmusik. Mozart at original locations Quotations from Mozarts own letters and musical examples played in the locations where they were composed or performed, combine to form an immediate, authentic image of the composer and his period. At the same time, the real locations chosen for the event also create a link with the present day. 50 hotspots for Vienna Information pillars with a memorable design will be placed at several dozen locations in Vienna - predominantly in the city centre - to mark the connection of these sites with Mozarts time. A Mozart hotspot is characterised by the information pillar, audio information, and the impact of the authentic location. The audio information is divided into sections on the life and works of the composer, facts about the place itself, and details about the period - from the places Mozart visited as a six-year-old boy to the stations of his final years. Thus visitors can, for example, follow the traces of Mozart the child prodigy or fall under the spell of a musician as gifted as he was manic. Calling Mozart showcases Mozarts private life as well as his public persona as an exceptional artist and the role this persona played in the age of enlightenment. A Mozart map of Vienna Special street maps have been developed to show the dense web of Mozart hotspots in the city. These maps, which are available from the Infocenter near the Vienna State Opera, help visitors select the hotspots in the Calling Mozart network that most closely reflect their individual interests. The stations are listed in chronological order - from 6 October 1762 to 5 December 1791 and even beyond, to include Mozart memorials. There are a number of separate tours with specific themes. For example, visitors can walk in Mozarts footsteps during his first trip to Vienna, visit the places where the young Mozart lived and worked, read his letters to learn about his road to independence and artistic freedom, visit the scenes of his greatest successes, observe how the places where he lived reflected his social descent, and finally absorb the atmosphere of every station of the last, intense year of Mozarts life. Getting on track by cell phone Calling Mozart users can dial a central landline number from their own cell phones to get information about any hotspot. The extension number of each hotspot is shown on the information pillar at the hotspot and on the main fold-out map of the project. Visitors from abroad who would prefer to avoid cell phone roaming charges can rent audio guides or download more information in MP3 format from www.callingmozart.at . This Web site contains everything about Calling Mozart as well as additional information about each hotspot and facts about the Mozart jubilee year, with links to the Web sites of the project partners: WIENER MOZARTJAHR 2006 and Radio Österreich 1. Calling Mozart will run from 27 January 2006 to 5 December 2006. The information at the audio stations is available around the clock.
