Traces of Mozart in Vienna

This exhibition in the Wiener Stadt- und Landesarchiv (Gasometer D) examines the historical traces of Mozart in Vienna, inviting visitors to embark on a voyage of discovery into the past. Thanks to liaison by the Austrian Foreign Ministry, “Traces of Mozart in Vienna” will also go on tour in Europe, Asia, Africa and South America.

Next to Salzburg, Vienna was the most important city in Mozart’s life. Here the composer spent his last ten years, and here his most important works were written. If one counts the places where Mozart stayed as a child and a young man, the composer occupied over a dozen apartments in Vienna for varying lengths of time. And then there are the important venues where he worked and where his music was performed - places where Mozart faced his public as an active musician. Regrettably, most of these places have disappeared from Vienna‘s present-day urban landscape. The only surviving apartment where Mozart once resided can be found in the building formerly known as the „Figarohaus“ (Domgasse 5) near St. Stephen‘s Cathedral, which was converted into the Mozarthaus Vienna with support from WIENER MOZARTJAHR 2006. Important theatres such as the Altes Burgtheater, the Kärntnertortheater and the Etablissement Mehlgrube have long since vanished.

The exhibition in the Wiener Stadt- und Landesarchiv (Municipal and Provincial Archives of Vienna) attempts to explore the traces of the composer in the topography of the city as it is today. In the process, the Vienna of the past is juxtaposed with the Vienna of the present.

“Traces of Mozart” in Vienna will be presented from January to September 2006 in the exhibition foyer of the Wiener Stadt- und Landesarchiv (Gasometer D on Guglgasse in Vienna‘s 11th district). The Austrian Federal Ministry for Foreign Affairs has also arranged for the small exhibition to be shown at 25 Austrian embassies, cultural institutes and cultural forums across Europe, Asia, Africa and South America over the coming year.
