Ilia Laporev was born in Ghent in 1990. He began playing the cello at the age of nine, studying with the Belgian cellist Hans Mannes, and later studied with Hans-Ludwig Becker and Jan Sciffer. Currently he is continuing his studies with Pieter Stas at the secondary school for music and arts and with his father, Ilia Laporev (senior), at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp. Ilia has participated in master classes with leading cellists such as Professor Frans Helmerson and Professor Vladimir Perlin and with the organisation “Musica Mundi”.

He has received awards at several Belgian competitions for young musicians, such as “Jong Tenuto”. In 2005 he won the first prize at the international cello competition at Sint Pieters-Woluwe (Brussels). In 2004 he was chosen by YoTaM, a Flemish foundation which supports young talented musicians both musically and with scholarships.

Ilia Laporev has performed concertos with several Belgian youth orchestras and with the Flemish Radio Orchestra. Recent concert appearances have included a recital in Minsk in April 2006.
